People who study for a nursing degree don't always have to wait until they've graduated to start performing helpful public services.
One example was recently reported on by the Utica (NY) Observer-Dispatch, where a group of student nurses served meals at a local shelter as part of a broader outreach effort.
"We're making the healthcare community more accessible to the individuals who come here. And if we're making ourselves available in a non-judgmental environment, they are more likely to listen to our advice about health issues," Elizabeth Hillier of the Mohawk Community College Student Nurse Organization told the newspaper.
A growing number of people have been attracted to nursing because of a nationwide shortage and because the industry is seen as being fairly recession-proof.
Still, nurses care for people from all walks of life and perform a valuable public service in the process. With this in mind, volunteer work is just one way that future nurses can prepare for the career experiences that await them.
If you think a nursing career may be for you, take some time to explore the various online nursing programs and classroom options that may be available.
