Nursing Shortage Felt In Florida, Elsewhere

A Florida journalist is calling on her state to tackle its growing nursing shortage in light of her own recent experiences bringing her mother to a local hospital.
In a recent Palm Beach Post editorial, Rhonda Swan notes that Florida is expecting a shortfall of 18,000 full time nurses by 2010, which could expand to 52,000 by 2020. She cites one local economic consultant's belief that this shortage is currently the biggest problem facing Palm Beach County.
"It's a crisis Florida must address now," wrote Swan, also warning that the state is on the brink of a shortage of doctors.
Swan's mother had gone to the emergency room for a blood clot in her leg. However, Swan noted that the effects of the nursing shortage were visible in the form of long waits for patients, as well as other factors.
Florida is not the only place experiencing a shortage of nursing. Many other states are resorting to various methods to bring more people into the profession and to attract qualified professionals from other places.
